Abstract

North Coast of Nile Delta represents a logical urban expansion of crowded cities in Delta region which are increasingly getting overwhelmed by social, economic, ecological, and cultural problems. The government adopted establishment of new communities along the international coastal axis represented in new cities, urban expansions and villages. Despite of this optimistic vision, the current state didn’t match the proposed objectives of the urban development plans. The aim of research is to evaluate urban sustainability of the selected neighborhood cases in the existing new communities. The research methodology is based on descriptive and analytical methods through data analysis, study visits, interviews, surveys and prioritizing. The evaluation is based on UN-Habitat principals of sustainable neighborhoods to be compact, integrated, and connected. It recommends a range of quantitative measurements as a sustainability analysis of neighborhoods through five main principals; efficient street network, high density, mixed land-use, social mix and limited land-use specialization. The results of evaluation show the weaknesses of the physical urban context efficiency for each case to be developed. Finally, urban development guidelines are suggested to promote urban growth and maximize urban efficiency.
