Urban- City Lab is an initiative by Egyptian Sustainable Urbanism – ESU lab to perform an interdisciplinary research by linking technical issues in the context of digitization with urban planning development in Egypt. As the dynamics of population growth and the demand for quality of life, cities witness higher demand for housing and services to cope with the rapid changes. The focus of our Lab is to develop rapid and interactive systems that can model the changes in cities and improve their systems. Digital tools could enable planners and policy-makers to make better decisions, especially when data may be a major issue.
The lab will act as an Entrepreneurship model developing research projects and consulting in different urban topics related to GIS and Digital applications, smart Cities, urban agriculture and informality. It will offer training on the topics of GIS application and 3D geo-data modelling and infrastructure.

Five different locations together with four research topics create the research points matrix of the Urban City lab, by means of funded research projects and academic studies of the lab team. The lab looks forward to cooperating with national/international institutes to cover the current research topics as well as high-priority challenges in Egyptian urbanism.
Main goals
- Development of GIS Data for 3D visualization for cities and data analysis.
- Creation of a dynamic 3D urban model for the development of Cities.
- Simulation of alternative future sustainable and innovative development scenarios.
- Development of a form based code for Delta Cities and preserve Urban Character.
- Development of an interactive 3D GIS cloud-based web portal for citizen participation and a dashboard for decision support within the city government.
- Develop funding projects and further cooperation with international universities and institutions.
